San Diego Chips and Memory gone and out of business?

Who knows!?!?!  Everything is all cleaned out of the shop and the phone number and website have been down for days.  www.chipsandmemory.com  Anyway, we don't know too much about them other that they were around for a long time and had a pretty good reputation.  If anyone either knows what happened or needs similar services, let us know!

Cloning Windows 8 with UEFI Error code: 0xc0000225 Fix

We had a San Diego client with a relatively new PC experience hard drive failure. The drive behaved well enough for us to attempt to clone the hard drive to a replacement to avoid a multi-hour re-setup. The cloning process went through as well as expected, but after booting the PC with the new freshly cloned drive, I ran into a stop error: 0xc0000225

This is related to the Windows boot configuration in relation to UEFI enabled machines. It is resolvable with a quick trip to command prompt via the Windows 8 "Repair your computer" options that can be accessed from the appropriate Windows 8 disc.

Enter the advanced options until you see an option to startup Command Prompt. Once that opens, enter the following:

  1. Diskpart

  2. List volume

  3. Select volume=2 (replace “2” with the number that is associated with the system reserved label)

  4. assign letter=Z

  5. exit

  6. bcdboot C:\windows /s Z: /f UEFI (replace C: with the volume letter that is labeled “OS”)

After that, restart the PC. In many cases, it may prompt for which Windows 8 install to boot into. After making the correct selection (no harm in being wrong here, restart and try the other option), Windows should boot up. My experience was that the first time booting was slow, but after a restart, it performed normally.

Cleanup: If you don't do the following, you may have Windows prompt for which install to boot to everytime you restart. Once you are in Windows, go to the MSCONFIG menu and remove the erroneous Windows 8 option from the Boot tab. After that is done, the PC will boot cleanly.

Dllhost.exe *32 Com Surrogate running mad on CPU 100 Percent and Memory, solved!

I ran into this virus on a Windows 7 PC Computer in San Diego.  dllhost runs in multiple instances and ultimately a fairly new computer ran terrible.  I threw just about every cleaning utility at it but really the only one that killed it was Combofix.  Solved and I was amazed at how well the PC ran afterwards.

Firefox opens to a blank or black screen

Here's a random fix we've seen twice now this week.  Firefox, hardware acceleration issue.

unchecking the "Use hardware acceleration when available" option solves this issue. This option is in the Advanced section, under the General tab.

About The Russian Hacker News Story

A Russian crime ring stole 1.2 billion usernames and password combinations and more than 500 million email addresses. The criminals apparently didn't sell many of the records online. Rather, they were using the information to send spam on social networks for certain groups at a fee. What should be noted however is that these credentials were gathered over the course of a year and a half, it did not all happen at once. So if you had your information stolen, you would have probably noticed by now or haven been alerted of it. If you are looking to nearly prevent the possibility of getting hacked, a 2-step authentication system similar to what we use could be added to your account. Ask us, but it's serious stuff! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Microsoft Impostors

There is a scam going around where someone claiming to be from Microsoft will call someone and tell them they found problems with their computer. These impostors will tell the person they've called that they need to be given remote access to their computer in order to help them resolve the issue. When they have access to the person's computer they will show them bogus errors that are not actually damaging to the computer and claim that they can remove those errors for a fee. The fee is usually exorbitant and if the person refuses to pay after giving the impostor access to their computer, the impostor will sometimes start try to damage the computer. If you get a call like this, your best choice is to just hang up. While Microsoft is a reputable company with a good IT department, they do not call customers and work with them one on one without the customer asking first. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Automated Calendar Reminders

We wanted to give you all the heads up on a new system we have implemented. Recently, we rolled out a system for automated phone, text and email reminders for upcoming appointments to reduce confusion and cancelations. If you get contacted by our reminder robot, don't be alarmed, we'll still try to be humans in person!

By the way, so far so good as we have really been impressed by the calendaring software and it's relatively low monthly cost. It's called AppToto [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001T9HHjE2alHZ2o7ZfdqP-fkLB6mDu8uIfriGUUMDmOlxVsadHbelCMvB3RGTvbDQmKnTcSqNCZ39tvTJ6FpRHHfllGSqOQ8sDR25kAwrfT8ScpdqFPpX03mlocCi8qbsZ2In7JLCbzXhtQu4EwvMJrQatBs9SUMLbn6kb_oX8gHP8jT5k5skDpJ8UH8ygW6IKc9DYLPexYSZlnPGthWN6qUrUaALldVi3FjL4VnRkDIFH1bzyuANP-qjzYZuX_HqD8vzO-Ero4_tbISzCstkqlbAQuakoTSMN0DxKWOQZP9mIdd4UAEq1Rg==&c=FrsijqQsF9I37gv--R5yaGJ3AfxAnqHU21vHLgZAQAar_LB4scrrNw==&ch=GaXGEu3U8D2Wv0EK3DXpQIU99Hzfh-Ep4MRNXDRZuVlFeHwztXFHTg==] if you want to check it out. What To Do About Spam and Phishing E-mail

A phishing e-mail is one of several ways that a computer can get infected with some sort of malware, adware, or even a virus. The unfortunate news is that there is no way to stop these emails from coming. The good news is that with just a little bit of caution you can stay safe. Phishing e-mails are often disguised as something you might interested in or curious about. They are good at making you want to check it out and click something. The key is to avoiding an infection is to take your time to analyze emails you weren't expecting to receive. If you can't quite figure out why you got an e-mail (it might even be someone you know who's had their email compromised) don't click any links or download the attachment in it. Just by doing this you can stay safe. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Malwarebytes Error - Internal error: Expression error 'Runtime Error' / External exception E06D7363

We have now seen this one a few times in San Diego with a few folks running this on their PC. This link basically says to run the MBAM Cleanup utility and then reboot and reinstall. Worked like a charm! Still no word on what causes this.

Microsoft Office 365 Personal Edition - Deal or Not? I say no!

Dell is offering deals on Office 365 Personal Edition for $69 or less. You have to read the tiny type to see that it is an annual subscription for 1 PC or Mac, plus a tablet or iPad install. It does include Outlook, which may tip the scales, but if you don't care about Outlook, it's not a good deal when you can buy the Office Home and Student version outright for $119 or better yet the Office 365 Home version for $99 (annual subscription) which includes Outlook and the installs for FIVE PC's or Macs. Microsoft seems to want to get 2 things, a steady flow of money annually and also it's users running the current version of Office. Of course, if a person quit paying the subscription, the Office basically turns into a 'reader' and disallows the ability to edit or create documents.

In my opinion, if you need Office for a few PC's buy an Office 365 Home package for 5 computers for $99. If you only need Word, Excel and Powerpoint for one PC, buy it outright. I'm not sure the $69 personal version is a good deal after only 2 short years.

Lines on your stacks of scanned PDF's?

If you have a sheet fed scanner and there are constant lines on the scans, be sure to check the left side of your unit for scratches on the glass. I know a business owner in San Diego has had this happen and sure enough, it was a spec of dirt on the narrow strip of glass that the scanner utilized. You'll know for sure if flatbed scans still work. Have fun!

Time Warner Email Woes!

Microsoft Office 365 Subscriptions and Email Upgrades

Microsoft Office has always been and continues to be a paid add-on that basically everyone needs. At $219 per copy for the full version including Outlook, it's not cheap. Microsoft has been rolling out a subscription based service as low as $99 a year that allows you to install Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook on up to 5 computers. Additionally, as the trend continues for software without install discs, all you will need is a user ID and password to get the current version.

Related to Outlook and email, MCW can help you or your company use a custom email address such as william@XYZcompany.com for example. We have done many pro upgrades to Microsoft Hosted Exchange (Office365) and Google Apps. Leave the headaches to us and honestly, after we upgrade you, your email will be far easier to use. Inquire with us and we'll let you know how we can help you look more professional and synchronize your email, contacts and calendar across your computers, iPad's and smart phones. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

AT&T Uverse and DSL Issues

Truecrypt Folder Encryption - Why did it end?

Personally and professionally I have used this free and reliable encryption software to store secure data in San Diego. In May of 2014, for reasons unknown as now, the site is dead and the new version only DE-crypts but does not EN-crypt. True, I tested it.

I am glad that I have archived what I'm now calling the last working version of Truecrypt. Version 7.1a was the last fully functional version as far as I can tell. I have read a few articles about the demise of the software and no one seems to have a concrete answer.

http://www.economist.com/news/science-and-technology/21603407-mysterious-useful-piece-software-disappears-mysteriously-tales

Here are my tests of versions 7.1a vs. 7.2.

UPDATE: Glad to see there is hope!  http://truecrypt.ch/

How To Run Internet Explorer With No Add-Ons/In Safe Mode In Windows 7 & 8

Recently we had a customer who couldn't access the Internet using Internet Explorer. After a little troubleshooting we discovered that it was an add-on problem by running Internet Explorer with no add-ons. By doing this, we were able to disable the malfunctioning add-on and get Internet Explorer working again. If you ever encounter problems accessing the Internet through Internet explorer you can try running Internet Explorer with no add-ons in order to determine if you are having an add-on malfunction. The how-to is below.

Running Internet Explorer With No Add-Ons In Windows 7:

Step 1: Press the start button

Step 2: With the start menu open, type in "internet explorer" (without the quotation marks) in the search bar at the bottom of the start menu

Step 3: From the list of results, select "Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)"

Step 4: You should now have a running window of Internet Explorer with no add-ons

Running Internet Explorer With No Add-Ons In Windows 8:

Step 1: On your keyboard, press and hold the windows key, (it's the key that has the Microsoft flag logo) then simultaneously press the R key. This will bring up a "Run" window

Step 2: In the Run window type in "iexplore.exe -extoff" (without the quotation marks)

Step 3. You should now have a running window of Internet Explorer with no add-ons

The Windows 8 method also works for Windows 7, but the Windows 7 method does not work in Windows 8.

Microsoft will also stop providing Microsoft Security Essentials April 8th

Microsoft has provided support for Windows XP for the past 12 years. But now the time has come for us, along with our hardware and software partners, to invest our resources toward supporting more recent technologies so that we can continue to deliver great new experiences.

As a result, after April 8, 2014, technical assistance for Windows XP will no longer be available, including automatic updates that help protect your PC. Microsoft will also stop providing Microsoft Security Essentials<http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download> for download on Windows XP on this date. (If you already have Microsoft Security Essentials installed, you will continue to receive antimalware signature updates for a limited time, but this does not mean that your PC will be secure because Microsoft will no longer be providing security updates to help protect your PC.)

If you continue to use Windows XP after support ends, your computer will still work but it might become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. Also, as more software and hardware manufacturers continue to optimize for more recent versions of Windows, you can expect to encounter greater numbers of apps and devices that do not work with Windows XP. Congratulations to us! We got the Angie's List 2013 Super Service Award

Here at Mobile Computer Wizard we work extra hard to keep folks happy. Well I guess it has paid off as Angie's List has acknowledged our fine work. Angie's List is a paid service, it costs a few dollars a month to search and read reviews for all types of services. Those who use it, love it, including ME, now I'm not on there looking for computer or laptop repair companies, I'm looking for plumbers, landscapers and painters and whatever else I know nothing about. Really, I want you to join so you can read our glowing reviews. If you don't want to join then I'll tell you that we are at least an "A" on the ratings!

Windows Server 2008 - Don't forget to add the Wireless Role

Of course, generally a Server OS should not be put on wireless. I came across a Windows Server 2008 PC that was temporarily setup in San Diego and wireless was the only option. No problem, but it's just more steps to get it connected after the USB wifi adaptor was added. The Server needed "Wireless LAN Service" 'feature' added.

XP-ocalypse! Windows XP Retirement

What happens when Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft? That is a great question that we won't fully be able to answer until it actually happens on April 8th. Will your world end if you are running XP after that? At MCW we think not, but XP ran its course from 2001 to 2007 so it will become incompatible by more and more common programs and hardware. Also, any PC running XP is likely 5 to 7 years old at best. All factors considered, it's not a bad time to think about replacing any computers you have that are still running XP before you run into problems. Windows 7 is great and so is Windows 8 with adjustments we can make. If you already have Windows 8 and do not like the menus, we can fix that. Don't worry, we are here to help, ask us what you need to purchase either via phone or email. We'd prefer whatever new device you get be headache free!

NK2 Auto complete Import for Outlook 2013

I added a few things to the Microsoft page to help out!

https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2806550

To import .nk2 files into Outlook 2013, follow these steps:

Make sure that the .nk2 file is in the following folder: %appdata%\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook Note The .nk2 file must have the (MAKE IT THE SAME IF IT'S NOT "OUTLOOK") same name as your current Outlook 2013 profile. By default, the profile name is "Outlook." To check the profile name, follow these steps: Click Start, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Mail. In the Mail Setup dialog box, click Show Profiles. Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type outlook.exe /importnk2, and then click OK. This should import the .nk2 file into the Outlook 2013 profile.

Note After you import the .nk2 file, the contents of the file are merged into the existing nickname cache that is currently stored in your mailbox.

Note The .nk2 file is renamed with a .old file name extension on the first start of Outlook 2013. Therefore, if you try to re-import the .nk2 file, remove the .old file name extension. ***** this will happen AFTER you close Outlook.

Quickbooks password recovery tool for QBW files

This my be a repeat issue as tax season rolls around. A client in San Diego had a Quickbooks file he couldn't open on his computer because he forgot his password. I was able to help him, but not by the tool below. As an FYI, if you are a paid quickbooks customer, you are able to call Intuit and have them remotely reset your password. Ask Kurt if you run into this and I'll give you more details.

Eset NOD32 vs. Outlook 2010 and 2013 IMAP email problem with port 993 SSL

A number of times now I have had issues with ESET and Outlook. Outlook 2013 and even the basic Nod32 email plug-ins are a problematic match. I have tried and failed to make those two programs happy. Yesterday, I had a major battle on a computer in San Diego needing to do a simple email check via gmail IMAP. The PC had Eset Smart Security version 5 and no matter what I did, no Gmail IMAP accounts would function on SSL post 993. After many futile attempts at trying just about everything, including disabling the ESET plugins and also disabling the ESET firewall, it still would fail. Lesson to be learned here is that if you think you are having a firewall issue, it's often required to completely uninstall the firewall software. Disabling it, just isn't good enough.

Dell HDMI port with VGA port supports dual Monitors

I have seen more and more of these lately and I have confirmed that it will run a VGA monitor and an HDMI monitor running 1920x1080 on both as a dual display. Luckily for the computer I had in San Diego, I had an HDMI to DVI cable to make it happen. I'm not sure if this will support a high frame rate, but for a simple dual monitor setup on a basic $600 Dell Inspiron desktop, this works fine.
