Great Tool to clean unwanted Adware/Spyware

A business in San Marcos had a nasty spyware problem that needed addressing - to manually clean up each PC would have taken forever. Ads, popups, toolbars, the whole nine yards!

The folks at BleepingComputer.com (a computer guy's best friend) recommend a program called ADWCleaner, and it worked wonderfully.

Definitely going to add this to my repertoire, and you should too!

Java Exploit in the News: Don't panic! You may have read or heard about a Java exploit that makes your computer vulnerable to virus infection. Usually, the media likes to exaggerate these events and this is no exception. We advise updating Java to Version 7 update 11 from www.java.com [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001MGjuiiD9NQwYJd-apPErUi4u0yo6G219YLJpSczBl8J570PSn7NzPVNJspJogZwEMfGG9vUU-KtHvKDO64fys3Lcc_k0osPcTvVW_ZGLWE0cjuHjS7V87JZhGTasJxd8HF8AxR9-ONGDvI5pvUpUI7-woWeA0Oi9fwrbsQDV5V5jAhZ6CJHofIMLPzWVmULiPpf0LDpmtFvnE4eJDIjvrWz-BoytDN_7]. Oracle, the maker of Java, announced they have patched the problem. Alternatively, you can disable Java in a variety of more complicated means. If you disable Java, consider that many websites use Java passively. If you turn it off, you may disable something necessary. If you do want to disable Java, this link [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001MGjuiiD9NQyglD9iC0-WmFIl_I0uKYaUfh1QVq-xB7Hy-8jhXOmDMG5ECCMhyc_q3DAhe4Qr0cF5o7X69a0C7XOVBxMJBGz01jJNhcXvLyXsofftgfiQ_I9a0B2iIgtyNVZfltBCV2G7BdIBUb4I8HTaMuj1SMybqjYtchA69HKFwA-LFN0ds_nXNA0R0pMlyYz948Cdq4Jnpx5JX3x9KOfE0Vk0PbOrmsS4pjv_rEjkZRN6x65wVuAnaC3xU0cOba2g45jUoYXewe1fE-SREDofq_2WcPVTk37xy8wEWgF4x8gdh_BR-73Y6_YKYfYJAJOqFWZ9IuE=] provides a straight forward tutorial. Cloud Backup FREE for a year!

There are about 27 ways to backup your data. We need you to choose at least one! CrashPlan [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001MGjuiiD9NQwh0T5Y6u3osxkx5FcY5f_x3325srgre9NND_oA2l00iMhGWOMUgR-HNAAnIDkHoN9ejgLDzCNsBR5FvTI5HCnx1e9i249BLF-IokR0bLNgFShGZPW7inWKJ_qaI0BNZCpDn5nPxH-GFJLIWyvM6axBuAJ7wS2PC6FhKfJbW_hbrZt6I5ZhwjQWBx4MqLmGF4pmJBH0vagCYarQ3o221Msypzun_I3mlT4hjZpLYKXWECxX6vFnfJTh] is a service we have been testing for a few years and it's been great. Even sweeter is that they are offering a whole year of unlimited data backup for free! It's designed for former Carbonite users, but it works for all email addresses.

Many of you may be on Mozy, Acronis or other programs. Don't worry, those are great too, no need to rush into a switch. We are just adding another option. If you are using "Plan Z", which involves luck and crossed fingers, then maybe you should give us a call. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Failed to connect to a windows service "Group Policy Client Service"

Windows could not connect to the group policy Client. Fun error. It really makes a mess. In my case near San Diego the PC was unstable, crashed and locked up after about 2 minutes. In safe mode, FYI, it ran fine.

I found this fix. I had to struggle with it a bit, but after following these instructions, got the service running again!

Fix:

Press Windows+R key and type

regedit and click ok

Go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\gpsvc - ADDED - be sure to take ownership and full rights for the administrators of the PC in order to delete. I had to fight this a little bit.

Right click on the key and EXPORT it to desktop.Right click on key and delete it from registry(not desktop)

Download

gpsvc.reg - it's in the MCW-DB - (\_Utilities\Registry Fixes)

Launch it and click YES, reboot and the service should be running.
