Moving ACT! Data to New Server and Sharing Database

I had a client in San Diego recently for whom I set a new server.  This meant moving the data for all of their programs;  This includes ACT!.

Moving ACT! is not as simple as moving, say, Quckbooks.  First, you have to move the folder where the ACT! database is contained to the proper location on the new server.

Normally you run the .pad file to open an ACT! database.  However, the first time the database is opened after the data is moved it is the .adf file that has to be run.  This must be run from the server.  Opening the .adf from the server will rewrite the .pad with the correct information.

Next disable the firewall on the server.  (I will update this if I figure out a way to allow just ACT! through the firewall).  This shouldn't be an issue as long as there is a hardware firewall (aka. a router).

The final step is to share the database.  Again, from the server, run ACT! as an administrator.  Then, go to Tools > Database Maintenance > Share Database.  If the option is greyed out, make sure you ran ACT! as an admin this time.

Make sure the correct options are setup so everyone on the network has permission to edit the folder/database files and you should be good to go.

Bitdefender Total Security Fail

We recently had a client in San Diego bring us her PC and it was running Bitdefender. Unfortunately, it ran Windows 8 with little or knowledge of all of these spyware and virus related files. We did the virus removal with MalwareBytes and Hitman Pro to get her computer running clean again. Joy!

Mobile Computer Wizard - A scary one in the wild.

Cryptolocker Virus is Nasty!

There's a new virus on the loose that actually destroys your files. It falls under a category of software called 'ransomware'. It encrypts and destroys all of your common files and then asks for $300 to decrypt them. The scary part is if you get infected, your files are permanently damaged. Your only reasonable recourse is to restore a back up version. This has only been in the wild for a few weeks and it's hard to say exactly how folks are getting infected. A potential source is bogus emails with shipping notifications. We are not trying to cause panic, but you need to have three things in order. First is a good antivirus program, though we have read it's working around even the best ones as this writing. Second is to not open webpages and emails unless you are absolutely certain of their origin. Thirdly, you need a backup program that does versioning.

Microsoft Remote Desktop from MSFT account to non Microsoft account.

I encountered a small glitch with remote desktop connection built into Windows in that one account was a Windows 8 pc with a Microsoft account and the other remote PC was a local account. I was required to use a switch to get me back to local by doing \local\USERNAME to make it connect.

Recover Accidentally Deleted Files

UndeleteMyFiles Pro is a quick way to recover accidentally deleted files. I've used other software to do this in the past, but the scans took hours meaning it was not something I could easily do onsite. This program took 93 seconds to scan my 250GB Samsung SSD so I estimate around 45 minutes to scan a 1TB mechanical drive. You will need to know either the file name or file path to recover what you are looking for.

It's completely free and can be download here<http://seriousbit.com/undeletemyfiles/> .

iOS7 Photo Download via USB Cable requires Trust

I was helping a client in North County San Diego with an iPad photo issue. Her iPad was getting too full so I helped her remove bulk photos and then set up photostream. One point is that a new setup of photostream only does new photos taken. Existing photos are not transferred to the PC via the iCloud control panel. It also happens automatically, there is NOT a way to trigger the sync. Assume there will be a 2 to 3 minute lag on the photo transfer. That's OK, but a bit annoying as your are waiting for confirmation. Thirdly, on iOS7 if you connect a USB cable to a computer to do a direct photo transfer a new feature requires that you 'trust' the PC or Mac. A pop up will display on the iPad awaiting confirmation before the photo drive will show up in my computer.

SysMate - Easily Replace Windows system files

In San Diego, we see a lot of virus infections that sometimes corrupt vital Windows system files. The normal process for correcting this is to boot into a live CD and replace the file outside of the Windows environment. SysMate<http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/File-Management/SysMate-System-File-Walker.shtml> allows you to replace these files within Windows, saving you time.

Saying Goodbye to Windows XP!

So it would be that time to start saying good bye to your beloved computer that is running Windows XP. Microsoft will no longer be providing support for XP after April 8, 2014. So what does this mean to you, the avid XP user who does not like change? It is time to accept the change!

Q&A:

What happens after April 4, 2013? - The answer is Microsoft will no longer issue any updates that will protect your computer from security risks and viruses.

Will I still be able to use my Windows XP computer? - The answer is yes.

Will Mobile Computer Wizard still support me if I have an XP computer? - The short answer is possibly. The long answer is: It depends on what is going on with your computer. A lot of the versions of software we use to support XP are starting to fade away and gear themselves towards Windows 7 and 8. This will make our jobs a lot harder and our success rate may drop. This is no way means we will say "No, you are using Windows XP, so will not support you." It simply means, you need to get an updated computer.

What about the programs I use on my XP machine, will I still be able to use them? - The answer is yes, but with limitations. The limitations behing that when Microsoft stops supporting the operating system, 3rd party companies stop updating their software for the operating system being taken away and focus more on the latest and greatest. So when that update for QuickBooks comes out, don't expect to be able to update it on your XP machine.

Can I just buy the new Windows 7 or 8 and install it on my XP machine? - The answer: 99% no. When computers were released for XP, the hardware in them was the fastest and best at the time. That hardware is now defunct, as technology gets replaced very frequently throughout the year. If your computer has a label on it that says "Made for XP" and you have not updated any internal components, then you will need to buy a new computer.

What should I look for in a new computer? - The answer: It varies, based on your needs. For the best available options, call our office and we will ask you a serious of questions. Then we can remote to your machine, have your credit card ready and we will assist you in purchasing a new machine on the spot.

What about all my data, like my photos, documents, music, programs, etc? We can move all of that to your new computer for a nominal fee, with a turn around time of 24-48 business hours depending on the amount of the data to be transferred and your place in the queue. There are excepotions to this though:

a) We will not install any software in which you do not have the original disc and serial number for. You must provide those to us. If the software is a download, you will have to download that yourself.

b) We will not install any software that allows you to bypass the operating system, or any software licensing features (i.e. online activation). It violates federal and state law, as well as our company policy.

c) You mst also understand, that transferring all the data is not 100% guaranteed as their may be issues with the hard drive which is corrupting the data. MCW cannot be held liable if that is the case.

So now what do I do? Call us at (858) 345-0382, Mondays through Thursdays from 9am till 5pm & Fridays from 9am - 4pm and speak with one of our Wizards today! If you are an existing member of our extended family, call your Wizard directly, as they best understand your needs.

Phishing Emails and Viruses

Lately, we have had an influx in virus removal from Microsoft© Windows Computers which has quite a few known ways to get on a computer.

In this blog, I will discuss phishing emails. "Phishing is the act of attempting to acquire information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details (and sometimes, indirectly, money) by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication."

How to spot a phishing email:

1. Check who the email is addressed to and who it is from? Is it you and do you recognize the sender? If the answer to both of these is no, then immediately delete it.

2. The subject of the email - Does it say something about forwarding you a scan file? Were you expecting it? - Again, if you say yes to the first and no to the second, then just delete it.

3. The attachement - Most email services block the sending of the attachements if they meet certain extensions. Phishers found a way around this by sending it in a zip file. If you were not expecting a file from someone, just delete it.

4. Look at the body of the message, the opening may be overly formal or just formal using Mr. or Mrs., also, look for if the email is asking for information from you. If it is, it is phishing. No company will ever email you asking you for your personal information or password. Now, back to the from address. Is the name the same in the from field as it is in the closing of the email? If the email meets any of this criteria, it is 99% safe to delete.

5. Spelling - Always a major one (and myself being a big person on spelling and grammer) I always look at these. If there are mistakes, especially on common words that we use everyday (such as everyday, being spelled everday) then you know that it is potentially a phishing scam.

If any of this sounds familiar to you and you went ahead and opened the attachment, you should give us a call to make sure your computer is not infected. Nothing upsets someone more than a slow computer with a ton of pop-ups making the computer practically unusable.

Microsoft Office 2010 Trial or upgrade being forced on folks.

Three times now this week clients have called me saying that their documents no longer open up. Somehow, users with versions of Office 2010 Starter edition or older have been forced into an upgrade mode for a newer version of office. Good news is that it's a minor issue and in add/remove programs you can dump the latest Office install by sorting programs by date. Additionally, you may need to fix file associations. Thanks Microsoft!

Remove Trusteer Endpoint Protection Rapport Toolbar plug in removal solved!

A client in North County San Diego had this little piece of junk software on his PC. It may or may not be legit and related to banking sites, but in my opinion it is not needed. Standard removal from add/remove programs failed. This utility came from http://www.trusteer.com/node/1490/done?sid=126823 , it's called the Safe Uninstall Utility. More conveniently, without getting on thier email list, get it from here, but be SURE to RUN it as administrator or it won't work.

Google Docs and how to back it up.

We use Google Drive and Google Docs selectively, and also it is used with the Google Drive sync app. I learned that a Google Drive gsheet file on your computer is totally worthless. If the version does not exist on your actual Google Drive, you have NOTHING. I did manage to lose a file learning this, but it wasn't important.

Anyway, I do keep a couple of important files on Google Drive in the native format. I learned that the entire folder can be downloaded in Google Drive and backed up in MS Word Excel format for archiving.

If you want to backup your Google Drive files, it's easy via the website to export a whole folder. Do it!

Non-booting Rootkit Infection FIXED

I had a client bring their non-booting Windows 7 PC to our shop in Kearny Mesa. Through our diagnostic process, we discovered a particularly nasty rootkit was to blame. Attaching the drive as a secondary to another PC and scanning it did not work in this instance. Multiple antivirus/rookit tools found the infection, but were unable to properly remove it. Hirens Boot CD to the rescue!

In this circumstance, the best option was to overwrite the MBR where the infection was hidden. This can be done using a very labor intensive command prompt method or Hiren's Boot CD includes a tool called MBR Work. This program includes the standard Windows 7 MBR files and in short order I was back in Windows!

**If you are unfamiliar with Hirens Boot CD or changing your MBR - Have your technician do this!**

Here's the steps :
1) Boot into the Hirens Boot CD (Version 13 and above)

2) Select Master Boot Record Tools (Option 1 on the version I used)

3) Select MBR Work utility

4) Select option 5 for Installing standard MBR Code

5) Select Windows 7 (The alternative option is for Windows XP)

6) Select "E" option for Exit. Restart PC.

Happy troubleshooting!

iGoogle Replacement : My.Msn.com Review

Initial impression : Layout is very similar to iGoogle. News feed boxes are more defined. "Tabbed" sections allow for more genre specific news like sports, technology, money, health, etc.  Layout preferences have helpful resolution labels! Drag n' Drop organization.

Recommend : Microsoft based email account. I used my @outlook.com address for testing. This will save your layout and preferences. Otherwise you get the generic "editor's choice".

What I like : Fully featured replacement for iGoogle. Intuitive tabs, customization, and drag n' drop organization. Add content is incredibly rich with items you can add to your page. No blatant ads. Calendar and Inbox previews for MS email users. Bing search bar is clear as day- can't miss it.

What I don't like : Fox, Fox, MSN, Fox, & MSN : It lacks variety in sources for news. Tabs are not true tabs- they go to a different web pages. Not Google search. That is unfair to MSN, but that's what it is to be #2 search engine.

Verdict : Excellent. Why is this not a feature in Windows 8?  8/10

MS Hosted Exchange and Outlook 2007 / 2013

For anyone that is looking to add an MS Exchange email account to Outlook 2007 on a laptop, be sure to preface with it may or may not work, and if it doesn't you'll need to upgrade to 2013.

I'm about 4/5 with it working but this last time it just wasn't happening. 3 hours of troubleshooting later, I had him upgrade to 2013 and it worked fine.

QuickBooks 2013 manual firewall ports or use the QB File Doctor to fix

In a Windows 8 environment for an office in San Diego the following firewall ports need to be open. The list below is painful, so we downloaded and ran the QuickBooks File Doctor. That too took 10 minutes to run and ultimately said the file was fine, but in reality it added 6 exceptions to the firewall.

OR - you can do it the manual way here!

The following files access through your firewall on ports 80, 8019, 56723, and 55353 through 55357 for both incoming and outgoing traffic:

AutoBackupExe.exe located in C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks 2013

Dbmlsync.exe located in C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks 2013

DBManagerExe.exe located in C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks 2013

FileManagement.exe located in C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks 2013

FileMovementExe.exe located in C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks 2013

IntuitSyncManager.exe located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\Sync

QBCFMonitorService.exe located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks

QBDBMgrN.exe located in C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks 2013

QBGDSPlugin.exe located in C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks 2013

QBLaunch.exe located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks

QBServerUtilityMgr.exe located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks

QBW32.exe located in C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks 2013

QBUpdate.exe located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks\QBUpdate

QuickBooksMessaging.exe located in C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks 2013

OnlineBackup.exe located in C:\Program Files\QuickBooks Online Backup

Follow the instructions included in the QuickBooks file list above in combination with the instructions on the firewall maker’s web site (some common firewalls are listed below) to configure your firewall to allow Internet access to the QuickBooks files.

Note: Intuit is unable to supply information for all of the several hundred firewall programs available today. The links in the following list lead to information for some of the more common firewalls. If your firewall is not listed here, refer to your software's documentation or the software publisher's web site.

Gmail and your phone

Did you know, that earlier this year when Google eliminated the Free Gmail for Businesses, it also eliminated the active sync used for your email? In essence, if you get a new phone or delete the email account off of your phone and put it back on, you will have to download the Gmail for the phone and get your email that way or wait up to 15 minutes for it to get to your phone.....I personally don't accept that. BTW, they also did that for personal accounts, so now I have to use the app for both work and personal. :/

Eset Nod32 Outlook 2013 glitch

I give up! I had a few clients in north county San Diego having Outlook 2013 problems. It all related to the Eset Outlook plug-ins. Outlook would crash on send. You can turn the plug-ins off, but they turn themselves back on after about a month. Solution, sadly, is to remove Eset, even just the basic Antivirus.

Great File De-Duplication Utility De Dup Duplicates

Fast Duplicate File Finder is a great program that comes in a free edition that works well to clean up duplicates. We had a client in the San Diego area who had made an accidental mess of his photos, this utility helped a lot!

Also... added later

I tried 3 programs I found in an article. Outright- do not install a program called "Duplicate File Finder" by Auslogics. You WILL get junkware.

Of the programs I tried, I got mixed results on how it determined which should be the master folder. Probably works fine between only 2 folders, but I got unexpected and inconsistent results from 3 folders or more.

The winner is free software called VisiPics. It will actually allow you to pick which is the duplicate to move or remove. I've attached the worlds fastest tutorial on how to use it.

Activating Windows 8 on Retail PC Without a Product Key Sticker

In an attempt to further reduce piracy of Windows. Microsoft has allowed manufacturers to hard-code the Windows 8 product key into the motherboard. This is a non-traditional solution. No pseudo-intellectual musing from me on this topic today. Perhaps I will do a follow up on the implications for end users.

Here's how it is done.

1) Reload Windows 8 from certified Microsoft or Recovery disk

2) Download and run RWEverything

3) Under the "Access" menu, select ACPI

4) Select the "MSDM" tab at the top of the results

5) The product key is displayed here at the bottom.

6)Copy/Paste into Windows Activation Menu.

Internet Explorer 10 Desktop Mode Only in Windows 8

Windows 8 will occasionally open web shortcuts with the app-version of Internet Explorer. This does not sit well with users that need the fully featured desktop version-- especially for corporate websites that have strict protocols in place for security.

There is an option to always use the desktop version buried in the Internet Options. To set Internet Explorer to desktop mode only; open Control Panel and select Internet Options. Select the tab "Programs" and from the pull down menu choose "Always in Internet Explorer on the Desktop". For consistency, you will want to check the box marked : Open Internet Explorer tiles on the desktop.

Below is a visual guide to finding this in the menus :

Skype 6.3 Video Chat Errors with Nvidia Graphics : Solved

There is a known issue with the most current version of Skype 6.3 video chat and Nvidia graphics cards. I have experienced it with multiple graphics cards and multiple driver versions for those cards. The only solution at this time is to roll Skype back to version 6.2 or earlier.

The video chat problem truncates the lower 2/3rds of the incoming video in both the main view as well as the preview pane.

Below is an example of the issue:

GoDaddy Microsoft Hosted Exchange Email Account Limitations

I ran into this in San Diego and I'm hoping it's just a GoDaddy limitation and not all of Microsoft's accounts.  I was able to work around the need to use service@DOMAIN.com by creating an alias in the Exchange control panel so the client didn't have to change the email address.  service@ forwards to info@, DONE!

Auslogics BoostSpeed - Did they sell their souls?

A PC computer arrived at our shop in San Diego running a very aggressive program called Auslogics BoostSpeed version 5. I did all the tell tale thing like showing thousands of errors on the PC. It also claims to boost speed and optimize automatically. Most technicians agree these are bogus claims. Any program claiming to clean and optimize the registry is false and dangerous. Unfortunately, it does appear to be the same company that the disk defragmenting program comes from. I must also note, The PC quit booting, I was able to put it in diagnositc boot mode through safe mode to boot only the bare essentials. BoostSpeed still loaded up, wow!

The final part of my opinion came from the uninstall process. There was at least 4 extra popups warning me not to uninstall it and offering me a deal to buy and keep it. Shame on you Auslogics... too aggressive!

CutePDF is great for PDF editing and merging

I was curious how CutePDF compared to the branded version of Adobe Acrobat Standard. I was quite impressed with CutePDF... I installed the Pro evaluation version on a test PC in our San Diego shop and this thing works great! I merged a PDF, reordered the pages, rotated and removed a page. All quickly and easily.

Solid program! For only $50 the rubber stamp at the bottom of your PDF's is removed. Deal!

After you install it, if you have any functionality questions. We are here!

Great Tool to clean unwanted Adware/Spyware

A business in San Marcos had a nasty spyware problem that needed addressing - to manually clean up each PC would have taken forever. Ads, popups, toolbars, the whole nine yards!

The folks at BleepingComputer.com (a computer guy's best friend) recommend a program called ADWCleaner, and it worked wonderfully.

Definitely going to add this to my repertoire, and you should too!

Java Exploit in the News: Don't panic! You may have read or heard about a Java exploit that makes your computer vulnerable to virus infection. Failed to connect to a windows service "Group Policy Client Service"

Windows could not connect to the group policy Client. Fun error. It really makes a mess. In my case near San Diego the PC was unstable, crashed and locked up after about 2 minutes. In safe mode, FYI, it ran fine.

I found this fix. I had to struggle with it a bit, but after following these instructions, got the service running again!

Fix:

Press Windows+R key and type

regedit and click ok

Go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\gpsvc - ADDED - be sure to take ownership and full rights for the administrators of the PC in order to delete. I had to fight this a little bit.

Right click on the key and EXPORT it to desktop.Right click on key and delete it from registry(not desktop)

Download

gpsvc.reg - it's in the MCW-DB - (\_Utilities\Registry Fixes)

Launch it and click YES, reboot and the service should be running.
